Who is at Risk?

While anyone can develop Type 2 diabetes, certain factors increase your risk.

Ethnicity

Type 2 diabetes is 2-4 times more likely in people of South Asian, Black African, or Black Caribbean descent

Family History

If you have a parent or sibling with Type 2 diabetes, your risk is significantly increased

YOUR Age

Risk increases with age, especially after 40 (white) or 25 (South Asian and Black)

Other Conditions

High blood pressure and polycystic ovarian syndrome increase your risk

MALE

Men are at higher risk, possibly due to storing more fat around their waist

Overweight + Obesity

Excess weight, especially around the waist, substantially increases risk

What does your risk score mean?

Your risk score helps you understand your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. The higher your score, the higher your risk.

Low or medium risk: Great news - you’re on the right track to staying healthy! Maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay aware of any changes that might affect your risk in future. If your score is in the medium range, small lifestyle changes could lower your risk even further.

High or very high risk: We recommend you get a blood test to check for diabetes. You can do this through your GP practice. Taking action early can help prevent or delay diabetes and protect your health in the long run.

how to get tested

If your risk score was high or very high, please contact your GP practice to request a fasting blood glucose test and inform them of your risk score from this assessment.
